The results of the election are in, and Donald Trump will be the 47th president of the United States.
Trump’s win comes after a campaign in which he consistently targeted immigrants, transgender youth, and other vulnerable communities with hateful rhetoric. He also threatened retribution against dissidents and political opponents.
Many of us fear what these results mean for our communities, our nation, and ourselves. We know that a second Trump administration will be even more aggressive and effective than it was before — because Trump has repeatedly said so. But together, we are powerful enough to change the course of our nation’s history and defend our most fundamental rights and freedoms.
We also know that despair and resignation are not a strategy, but neither is hoping for the best without also taking action. The ACLU has a concrete plan to fight back—so when President-elect Trump comes for our communities, he’s going to have to get through all of us.
Before Trump takes office in January, we are urging President Biden and members of Congress to take action—and they need to hear from you about these important issues.
- We know what a Trump administration means for immigrant communities and our nation as a whole. That’s why we're calling on Congress to cut funding to DHS immigration enforcement and prevent Trump from having access to the resources he needs to carry out his mass deportation plans. Join us by sending your message to Congress now.
- Our privacy will be more important than ever during Trump’s second term. Send a public comment to the Biden administration now and demand an end to federal purchases of personal information before Trump takes office again this January.
- We should all be free to determine our own life course, which requires true bodily autonomy. Trump’s allies have laid out plans that include attacks on medication abortion, coming after access to birth control, and even an effective nationwide ban on abortion through the misuse of an outdated statute from 1873 called the Comstock Act. Add your name to our petition urging President-elect Trump to keep his hands off our reproductive rights.
- The death penalty system perpetuates injustice – Black, Brown, and economically disadvantaged people make up a disproportionate number of people on death row due to racial bias and sentencing errors. The death penalty also fails to deter crime, wasting resources without making our communities safer, and is fundamentally inhumane. During his first term, Donald Trump oversaw the execution of more people on death row than the previous ten presidential administrations combined, and he has promised to expand the use of the federal death penalty in his second term. President Biden must do everything possible before he leaves office to preserve our democracy and mitigate the harm that Trump's policies will create – and that starts with commuting the sentences of everyone on federal death row.
As soon as the 119th Congress is sworn in, we will urge members to use their constitutional powers to provide oversight, investigate wrongdoing, and reject restrictive executive branch policies. At the state level, we have already started working with lawmakers to build a firewall for freedom and enact laws that protect people from government abuse. And in our communities, we’ll keep working to educate people on what is at risk, what happens next, and how we can fight for our freedoms together.
With your support, our legal and policy experts are ready to hold the line and will respond with everything we’ve got to protect our most fundamental civil rights and civil liberties.
