Summary

The ACLU of Vermont is in search of a Finance & Accounting Consultant to work closely with our Operations Coordinator, Senior Manager for People & Culture, and Executive Director. The consultant will provide accounting and finance expertise for the organization, helping to optimize accounting systems and maintaining sound fiscal procedures and practices for ACLU-VT.

Scope

We anticipate the requested deliverables to take between 10 – 15 hours per week, however this may vary based on time of year and in-house capacity.

Key Deliverables

  • In conjunction with the Executive Director, guide and gauge the organization’s financial health in line with the objectives set by the Board of Directors.
  • In conjunction with the Executive Director, prepare and revise annual budgets.
  • Guide the organization’s accounting processes through design, implementation, and review of financial management systems and procedures.
  • Coordinate annual revenue reconciliation, liaising with the Development Manager as needed.
  • Prepare full set of financial statements for the organization three times each year.
  • Prepare year-end adjusting entries and internal audit schedules, including the year-end c3/c4 expense allocations, the schedule of functional expenses, and investment activity.
  • Analyze vendor activity for 1099 filing & calculate and prepare Union FUTA tax return annually.
  • Review and provide schedules as needed for the preparation of IRS Form 990s. Review & approve accounting entries completed by the Operations Coordinator.
  • Track and generate reports on grant spending.
  • Prepare monthly payroll entries and monthly transfer form.
  • Produce financial reports for the Executive Director and program directors as necessary.
  • Provide guidance to the Operations Coordinator on finance & accounting matters as needed.

Qualifications

  • Accounting degree; CPA certification strongly preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in financial management or consulting, non-profit experience a plus
  • Detail-oriented and systems-minded
  • Data entry skills with a high degree of accuracy
  • Technologically savvy with an ability to become familiar with org-specific software
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office & Microsoft 365 products
  • Working knowledge of QuickBooks
  • Paychex Flex experience is a plus
