On Saturday, September 15th at 5:00 PM, the ACLU of Vermont is hosting a screening of the powerful Emmy Award-winning & Oscar-nominated documentary 13th at The Big Picture Theatre in Waitsfield.
13th is a devastating and informative look at the nation's 13th Amendment, which banished slavery but marked the beginning of a national trend of incarcerating black men at staggeringly high rates and using our nation’s prison system as a means of continued repression and control of communities of color.
13th is filled with historical footage and images as well as numerous interviews with modern commentators and historical figures, drawing a hard and compelling line directly from the early days of “manufactured arrests” to the nation's modern crisis of mass incarceration.
Following the film, a panel of organizers and advocates working on issues of racial justice and criminal justice reform will tie together themes discussed in "13th" with Vermont-specific issues and the work being done to achieve justice in our state.
